Ways to Give

Through the generosity of donors, the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice is able to support scholarships and awards for students, assist students to present their work at professional meetings, enhance our facilities, and underwrite aspects of student and faculty research that are not supported in other ways. We currently are raising money aimed at establishing endowed assistantships for graduate students. Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to be able to launch our first assistantship to coincide with the initial cohort of our doctoral program (our proposed program is currently under review). We greatly appreciate every contribution we receive. Our foundation funds include those listed below. The Foundation is a designated 501(c)(3) organization with appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax-deductible receipts for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

To make a gift online, go to the SIU Foundation web site. On the Foundation's web site there are 3 areas for gift designations: Gift Designation #1, Gift Designation #2, and Additional/Other Designation. Enter the amount(s) for the appropriate category(ies) from the list below into the Additional/Other Designation section and click the “Continue” button. If you’d prefer, you can make your gift by sending directly to the department at the address below. Checks should designate the fund and be made payable to the SIU Foundation.

The Criminology & Criminal Justice Activity Fund: This fund supports many department activities directed at undergraduate and graduate student learning and research and faculty research. Funds are used for such activities as recruiting materials, student travel to present at professional meetings, materials for teaching, and computer resources.

The Elmer H. Johnson Fund: This endowed fund was established by Professor Johnson and his wife to support activities that enhance the department, such as sponsorship of guest lectures and conferences on campus, a scholarship or fellowship to defray educational expenses of an outstanding student.

The Myrl & Lorene Alexander Fellowship Fund: This endowed fund honors the founder of the Center for the Study of Crime, Delinquency, and Corrections at SIUC and former Director of the Bureau of Prisons. This fund is awarded on a periodic basis to a graduate student currently in the practice of corrections, including probation, parole, and community corrections, with high potential for both scholarship and accomplishment.

Phyllis Hunziker CCJ Graduate Student Memorial Fund: This fund honors a beloved former Administrative Assistant to the Graduate Program. The plan is to award the accumulated funds as a graduate scholarship once the doctoral program is established.

The Magnolia Scholarship Fund: This fund was established Dr. Rod Brunson and supported by the Faculty to assist high achieving, but financially constrained criminology and criminal justice students to assure that they purchase textbooks.

The Peanut Scholarship Fund: This fund was established to assist a good student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale who has financial difficulty because one or both parents have been involved in crime. This includes parents who are incarcerated or who because of being victims of crime are unable to provide financial support. The fund recognizes the nickname of a young man in this situation.
